Vendor Introductions: Part Seven

Starting off today’s vendor features is Jen of Jen Gregoire Photo.

1. What do you make/sell?

I’m a fine art and travel photographer. I sell my art on greeting cards, prints, canvas, and handmade wooden photo blocks sealed with resin.

2. Why do you make/sell it? What inspires your work?

I fancy myself a bit of a storyteller…the photos I take can transport you to another time or place.

I was born and raised in Calgary and when my country-boy husband and I moved to a tiny rural Alberta town about six years ago, I was immediately and completely inspired by my new surroundings. It’s not unusual for me to spend whole days traveling down gravel roads looking for treasure – an old homestead or abandoned barn, a vintage truck rusted with age. Finding these characters holds as much excitement for me as taking their photo – it’s like they have a secret that I get to learn and share with everyone who sees my work.

When I’m not scouring southern Alberta for my next story, I love to travel and I’m always dreaming about the next stamp in my passport. Spending time somewhere new and finding something unexpected to share with others is a huge inspiration for me.

Being a fine art photographer has given me a creative outlet and freedom to try new things, to experiment, to play with how light and perspective can bring something to life in an image. Sharing that with others, and telling people about how a particular shot came together, is one of my favorite things to do.

3. Is there anything you’d like to tell others about what you do?

I can take you on a journey with my photography. The beach, the country, New York…you can come on a journey with me without leaving your home or office. Doctor Seuss said, “Oh the places you’ll go!”. Where can I take you today?

Next up we have Hugh of Light Tech.

1. What do you make/sell?

We make stuff from other stuff, mainly lamps, but anything else we can conjure up in our little workshop.

2. Why do you make/sell it? What inspires your work?

We love figuring out how things work and making them ourselves. As a full time plumber, pipes seemed like a natural medium! We are inspired by other crafty individuals, with Calgary’s Maker Fair, Beakerhead and the other local events we are spoiled with inspiration to continue to experiment and make different things.

3. Is there anything you’d like to tell others about what you do?

We do what we do for several reasons but our main drive comes from one source, Lego Death Star, when your business partner is your seven year old son you have to make some concessions, 50% of any profits made go directly into our Lego Death Star fund!

Next up we have Jason of JB Leather Supply.

1. What do you make/sell?

I make handmade leather products such as wallets, bags, belts and mens shaving supplies. I also take on custom requests.

2. Why do you make/sell it? What inspires your work?

The inspiration for my work comes from seeing the finished product and getting into the hands of the customer. I love to see the product evolve and the leather take on a life of its own as it breaks in and and changes to meet the needs and identity of the user.

3. Is there anything you’d like to tell others about what you do?

I personally choose all my leather and have inspected each piece before purchase and production. Only the best quality leathers are used. In many cases this is “Full Grain” leather meaning the strongest and most beautiful part (top layer) has not been sanded off for aesthetics. This is the best you can get! All patterns are designed by me then hand cut, dyed, punched, stitched and tested by myself. The goal of these products is to get better as you use them not start to deteriorate as some others do. I hope these product serve well for years to come and become a part of your everyday life.

Up next we have Wendi of Harmony Grace Designs.

1. What do you make/sell?

I make clothing accessories for the whole family; bibdanas, knit and infinity scarves, slippers and stuffed toys, the list does go on :).

2. Why do you make/sell it? What inspires your work?

I grew up around people who created beauty out of the ordinary. Handmade and handcrafted toys, sweaters, knit hats and gloves, and the extra special Christmas slippers left a lasting legacy. I strive to create handcrafted items and accessories that invoke a feeling of warmth, of being cared for and loved. I find inspiration in nature and also in the animal kingdom, what a vast array of cool creatures!

3. Is there anything you’d like to tell others about what you do?

I like to buy from local shops and local fiber spinners. I feel you have a greater connection to the piece when you know the history and story of the product.

One-of-a-kind designed and handmade sterling silver jewelry that feature precious stones, etching, enameling and metalsmithing techniques.

2. Why do you make/sell it? What inspires your work?

I love working with my hands to create items that speak to people. In jewelry design there is always a balance between form and function and I try to achieve it within every piece I make, that is what drives me to continue making my line of evolving jewelry

3. Is there anything you’d like to tell others about what you do?

3. I am always open to custom orders – I just finished a piece where a couple traveled to Paris and found a beautiful stone on the road. The husband & I designed a piece for his wife to remember their wonderful trip. This kind of piece is why I love creating jewelry with stories and memories attached to them.
