Next we have Sophie of Tribes Society.

1. What do you make/sell?

I design and fabricate jewelry (women, men, unisex) in my Calgary studio. Most pieces are minimalist, and made of sterling silver, brass, gold-filled, and semi precious gemstones.

2. Why do you make/sell it? What inspires your work?

I love learning new silversmithing skills, and building on the ones I’ve honed with time. I’m also very drawn to archaeology and history. Many of my designs are inspired by some of the jewelry found during digs, and when buried hoards are discovered. Knowing that people have worn jewelry to distinguish their status, tribe, beliefs, and personality thousands of years ago, when we still do the same now, is amazing.

3. Is there anything you’d like to tell others about what you do?

Every single piece I’ve crafted means a lot to me. The effort and love I put in fabricating, cutting, filing, soldering, polishing each piece is a reflection of the passion I have for my craft.

Next up we have Shannon of Garden Villa Arts.

1. What do you make/sell?

I paint original watercolours, specializing in pet portraits. I also have greeting card prints of my paintings.

2. Why do you make/sell it? What inspires your work?

I love the watercolour medium because of its subtle beauty…the way the colours blend is amazing, and can be very challenging to work with!

I am inspired by the beauty all around me, particularly in flowers and in animals. I also love being able to capture the comic look on a dog’s face, or the way the sunlight highlights the fur on a sleeping cat.

3. Is there anything you’d like to tell others about what you do?

Lately I have been focusing on painting lots of dogs and cats (and the odd giraffe), so am excited to take pet portrait requests. I can do a portrait from a good quality digital photograph provided by the client. Pet portraits make wonderful, unique and affordable gifts, especially with Christmas coming up!

Finally for today we have Shannon of The Otter and the Owl.

1. What do you make/sell?

Hello! My name is Shannon Carmichael. I’m the principal artist and designer behind The Otter & The Owl.

The Otter & The Owl focuses on producing playful and creative artworks and stationery items. I offer a wide arrange of products including: playful one-inch pin back buttons and magnets; custom one-inch button wedding favours; whimsical acrylic and gouache paintings; printable wedding stationery and decor items; and printable home decor. I hand design and make all of my products in my home-based studio in Brooks, Alberta.

2. Why do you make/sell it? What inspires you?

Art is my passion. Ever since I was a young child I have loved to draw, paint, and create. I love experimenting with new mediums and challenging myself to expand my artistic abilities.

The simple things around me inspire my work. I am a firm believer that it is important to take time to appreciate the small things in life. I always carry a small sketchbook around with me and I try to draw in it at least once a day. Most of my artworks and Otter & Owl products started out as a quick doodle in my sketchbook.

My customers also inspire me. I love working with my clients to create custom artworks and products. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to brings someone else’s vision to life.

3. Is there anything you’d like to tell others about what you do?

I am so excited to be part of this year’s Etsy: Made in Canada Calgary Market! Make sure to stop by The Otter & The Owl to say hello. Feel free to contact me if you’d like to commission a work of art.
